Low-Level Light Therapy

Low-Level Light Therapy
February 17, 2020Medical Articles

Dr. Warner here –

Low-level light therapy (LLLT) is a form of treatment that I often use in my practice. I utilize this form of therapy to reduce pain and inflammation and to lessen the appearance of scars as well as the formation of scars. Sadly, this treatment is typically not covered by insurance companies, even though there is abundant evidence as to its efficacy.

Pain Relief With LLLT

A recent study looked at a low-level light therapy at the wavelength of 635 nanometers and its effects on pain. The group using the LLLT for 15 minutes per day twice a week had a 35% reduction in pain. This required no injections, no pills, and nothing addictive as a method of relief. In fact, there was a 49% reduction in pain reported which compares well to an overall 20% pain reduction with opioids.

There were no adverse events observed during this study, and the group treated was very satisfied with the results reached.

Another great study measured serum (blood) levels of inflammatory components. Namely, the study observed TNF-alpha and IL-8. Both of these highly inflammatory substances were reduced in the blood after the use of low-level light therapy.

This type of therapy has also been shown to be effective for the treatment of shoulder pain, plantar fasciitis, and fibromyalgia, among other conditions.

How Does It Work?

Low-level light therapy uses a laser in a safe manner to treat pain and inflammation effectively and safely. At Warner Orthopedics and Wellness, we often use this modality in our practice as we prefer natural treatments of pain, such as photobiomodulation, as opposed to unnatural treatments such as steroids or narcotics.
