Hi, Dr. Meredith Warner here:
I’m a board certified orthopedic surgeon, Air Force veteran, and founder of Warner Orthopedics and Wellness, a Baton Rouge, LA based clinic.
At Warner Orthopedics and Wellness, I work alongside other providers and staff to establish the best treatment plans for each individual patient.
I understand that each person is different. Many factors can interfere with your ability to get better, including diet, exercise, work-life balance, stress levels and more. That’s why looking at all these aspects of your life and setting the right course of action for you are vital when it comes to reducing pain levels and feeling functional progress.
Over the years, I’ve had many patients approach me about nerve pain or discomfort. A lot of these patients are experiencing issues related to their peripheral nervous system (PNS). This refers to any nerves outside the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS is the brain and the spinal cord. The PNS comprises nerves in just about any other body part.
Peripheral neuropathy can be debilitating, disrupting your ability to work or engage in activities you generally enjoy doing.
Peripheral Stimulation is a safe, minimally-invasive option for those whose lives have been disrupted by peripheral neuropathy. This is a wonderful technology that is highly effective to eliminate nerve pain in the hips, knees, limbs, even the lower back. It is a specialized technology and requires expert levels of training and expertise in nerve-based pain. Dr. Warner and her entire team have that expertise as well as years of experience treating nerve pain.
While the amount of reduced pain can vary from person to person, this can depend on the individual, severity of pain, and the condition treated.
Peripheral nerve stimulation targets nerves that are the root cause of pain by sending small amounts of electrical current to those nerves in order to mask the pain you’re feeling.
During the initial phase of the peripheral nerve stimulation process, you’ll have an electrode placed near the affected nerves. Patients do not typically need to be fully unconscious for this procedure. We’ll typically apply a local anesthetic, or a light general anesthetic.
At this point – you’d still be in the trial period for this treatment, where both you and I will go over your responsiveness to the treatment and whether or not it will be effective for you in the long-term. This is a vital part of the process as it makes no sense to implant such a device if it will not give you all of the comfort you need.
If you do not choose to continue with this treatment, the device will be removed and alternative treatment methods will be pursued. If this method of treatment helps reduce your pain and you decide to move forward with it, we will continue into the next phase.
The second phase of this treatment process involves insertion of a permanent implant, generally these should last for years. The device is powered wirelessly either with a cell phone app or with an adhesive receiver that you place on your skin whenever you need the device to work. You control the peripheral nerve stimulator and you are empowered to manage your own pain. At this point, patients are able to continue regular activities. In fact, there are no restrictions on activity at all.
For more information, we’ve written a complete breakdown of how do peripheral stimulator implants work.
Offering you cutting-edge therapies for pain control and improved function.
If you’re interested in peripheral stimulator implantation, I’d recommend giving the clinic a call to set up an appointment.
Nerve pain is a major source of discomfort for many of my patients, but each person is unique. That’s why I encourage them to discuss all their options, so we can find their best course of treatment.
Peripheral stimulator implants are shown to reduce pain in up to 70 percent of patients who receive this treatment. In Dr. Warner’s experience, the outcomes have been even better, with nearly 85% of patients receiving near total pain control.
We look forward to bringing you the care you need in the comfort of our brand new wellness clinic. Our team will work to diagnose your condition and develop your personalized treatment plan.
