Is My Brain Health and Orthopedic Health Connected?

June 22, 2023EducationMedical Articles

As humans, we often think of our physical and mental health as being separate. But the truth is, our brain health and orthopedic health are more connected than we realize.

connection between the brain and body

The brain plays a critical role in controlling the body’s movements, including those of our joints, bones, and muscles. So when damage or injury happens to the brain it can affect our physical mobility, balance, and coordination. This is evident in conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and stroke, which can cause muscle weakness, tremors, and difficulty with movement.

But did you know orthopedic injuries or conditions can also impact the brain? Chronic pain can lead to changes in the brain’s chemistry, structure, and function. These changes can affect cognitive function, mood, and behavior, leading to depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. Research has shown that maintaining a healthy brain is important for preventing and managing orthopedic conditions.

So, what can we do to promote both brain and orthopedic health? Here are a few tips:

Stay Physically Active

Regular exercise is beneficial for both brain and orthopedic health. It can improve cognition, balance, and muscle strength, reducing the risk of falls and fractures. When bone and muscle are stimulated with exercise, they increase levels of important neurotransmitters in the brain that reduce the risk of dementia as well. Not only that, but exercise can help with your immunity too!

Self‐compassion is an important way to break the grip of depression and anxiety caused by pain. In some cases, you may want to seek professional help with therapy and medication to deal with symptoms of depression or anxiety. Don’t be afraid to get help!

It’s clear that our brain health and orthopedic health are interconnected. Taking care of our brain can improve our physical mobility. A holistic approach to health that addresses both the body and mind is the key to optimal health and well-being.
