How Metabolic Health Affect Your Joints

How Metabolic Health Affect Your Joints
July 20, 2023EducationMedical Articles

Metabolic health refers to how well your body processes and uses energy to maintain its functions. This process includes controlling your blood sugar levels, maintaining normal levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, and keeping your body weight at a healthy level. It is critical to understand that metabolic health can have an impact on various body systems, including the musculoskeletal system.

Metabolic Conditions That Affect Joints

Metabolic health issues, such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes, can increase the risk of joint pain, stiffness, and other musculoskeletal problems. The inflammation and insulin resistance associated with metabolic syndrome as well as excess body fat puts extra metabolic pressure on the joints, which can lead to osteoarthritis in the knees, hips, and other weight-bearing joints.

One study found that people with better metabolic health had a lower risk of developing osteoarthritis (OA). Those who maintained a healthy weight, had lower blood sugar levels, and had lower levels of inflammation in their bodies were less likely to develop OA. The study’s researchers concluded that maintaining metabolic health could be a potential preventative measure against OA.

Another study looked at how metabolic syndrome affects knee osteoarthritis. The study found that those with metabolic syndrome had a higher risk of developing knee OA, and that this risk increased with the number of metabolic abnormalities present. The study’s authors suggested that managing metabolic syndrome could potentially reduce the risk of developing OA.

Natural Ways to Manage your Metabolic Health & Joints:

Maintaining good metabolic health is important for joint health. Managing weight, blood sugar levels, and cholesterol levels, as well as reducing inflammation, can help reduce the risk of developing joint pain and preventing joint-related issues. A healthy lifestyle, such as exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight, can reduce your risk of developing joint problems.
