Most Common Bone Diseases

As an orthopedic surgeon, I’ve encountered many patients with various bone diseases. In this blog, I will discuss the most common bone diseases, including Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Scoliosis, Paget’s Disease, Bone Cancer, and Gout. To be fair, these are really connective tissue diseases. However, most of what I do on a daily basis is manage connective tissue problems. Bones, muscle, tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, and cartilage are all connective tissues.

Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs when the body loses too much bone, makes too little bone, or both. This causes the bones to become brittle and weak, making them more susceptible to fractures. Osteoporosis is more common in women, especially after menopause, but it can also occur in men. Treatment options may include medication to help slow down bone loss and/or increase bone density, as well as lifestyle changes such as exercise and a healthy diet. The best treatment is to lift weights, or engage in resistance exercise.

Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones degenerates over time, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling in the affected joint. Osteoarthritis is a disease of the entire joint, and all of its connective tissues. This malady is highly associated with inflammation and oxidative stress. This is more common in older adults, and treatment options may include medication to manage pain and inflammation, as well as physical therapy and exercise to improve mobility and strength. Diet is very important for the management of this problem as well.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes the body’s immune system to attack its own tissues, including the joints, leading to inflammation, pain, and stiffness. It can affect people of any age, and while there is no cure, treatment options may include medication to manage symptoms, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes such as exercise and a healthy diet. RA will damage bone with erosion and cyst formation if left unmanaged.

Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves and twists, resulting in an S or C-shaped curve. While some cases of scoliosis are mild and may not require treatment, others may require a brace or surgery to correct the curve and prevent further progression. Scoliosis is a complex condition and should be managed carefully.

Paget’s Disease
Paget’s Disease is a bone disorder that results in the abnormal breakdown and formation of bone tissue, leading to weakened and deformed bones. It is more common in older adults, and treatment options may include medication to help regulate bone turnover and prevent further bone damage. The body has a very elegant method of recycling and repairing damaged bone, with Paget’s disease this method is disrupted.

Bone Cancer
Bone cancer is a rare type of cancer that can develop in the bone tissue, and may occur in children and adults. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, and fractures, and treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. There are a variety of different forms of bone cancer and each requires a different type of treatment.

Gout
Lastly, Gout is a common bone disease that occurs when there is a buildup of uric acid in the blood, leading to the formation of crystals in the joints. This can cause intense pain, swelling, and redness in the affected joint, most commonly in the big toe, but can also affect other joints such as the ankle, knee, wrist, and elbow. Gout might also form cysts, or tophi, found throughout the connective tissue of the body. Gout has been thought to be more common in men than in women, and is often associated with a diet high in purines, which are found in red meat, seafood, and alcohol. For some, our Tart Cherry Extract by Well Theory provides amazing natural relief for those experiencing gout. This extract has flavonoids that are known to assist in the control of uric acid.
