Understanding Bunions & Your Options for Treatment!

Are bunions getting in the way of your summer? Just like every person is not the same, not every bunion is the same. There are different ways to treat your bunion pain depending on the severity of the deformity, your age, and lifestyle. If you have tried conservative measures without any relief, we can help you select the procedure that works best for you. There are generally 4 different types of procedures used to treat bunions with most of them allowing you to be weight-bearing immediately after surgery.
Here is a list of the 4 most common bunion correction procedures we perform:
- Bunionectomy: This procedure removes the “bump” from the outside of the toe joint however is rarely done by itself and is usually done with soft tissue rebalancing or a cut in the bone (osteotomy) to realign the joint.
- Osteotomy: An osteotomy is a cut in the bone; the bone is then shifted over to correct the bunion deformity. It can be done at different parts of your bone depending on the severity of the deformity.
- Arthroplasty: Generally reserved for elderly patients with arthritic joints, a small portion of bone is removed from each side of the big toe joint.
- Arthrodesis: More commonly known as a “fusion”, the arthrodesis is generally reserved for more severe or recurring bunion deformities and usually requires a period of non-weight-bearing. The joint can either be fused at the big toe joint or the joint before it depending on several factors.
