Osteoarthritis (OA) is a condition that touches many lives, especially as we step into the chapters of our lives post-40. It’s a joint disease that causes cartilage to break down and can lead to stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility.

However, the effects of osteoarthritis extend beyond the physical symptoms. It’s not just about the joints; it’s also about the impact on mental health. The journey with OA can be challenging, not only physically but emotionally too. Let’s explore this connection and share natural approaches to support both body and mind.

Understanding the Link Between OA and Mental Health

The relationship between osteoarthritis and mental health is significant. The chronic pain and decreased mobility associated with OA can lead to feelings of frustration, anxiety, and even depression. The limitations imposed by the condition can affect one’s ability to engage in daily activities, hobbies, and social interactions, which are vital for emotional well-being.

It’s important to recognize these emotional responses as a natural part of living with osteoarthritis. Acknowledging the psychological impact is the first step toward holistic healing. The mind and body are deeply connected, and taking care of both is essential for managing OA effectively.

Strategies for Supporting Mental Health with OA

1. Stay Active Within Your Limits

Exercise might seem daunting when you’re dealing with joint pain, but it’s crucial for both physical and mental health. Low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, or yoga can reduce pain, improve joint function, and elevate mood. Movement releases endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, and mood elevators. It’s about finding the right balance and listening to your body. Here are some easy exercises for calming joint pain.

2. Embrace Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing exercises can help manage the stress and anxiety that often accompany osteoarthritis. These practices encourage a focus on the present moment and promote a sense of calm, helping to alleviate emotional distress.

3. Connect with Others

Sharing your experiences and feelings with friends, family, or support groups can provide emotional relief and a sense of belonging. Connection is a powerful tool against the isolation that sometimes comes with chronic conditions.

4. Pursue a Balanced Diet

Nutrition plays a vital role in managing OA and supporting mental health. A diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds can help reduce joint inflammation and pain.

5. Natural Supplements

Natural supplements formulated by orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Meredith Warner are a valuable addition to your wellness routine, offering support without the need for prescription drugs. Ingredients like turmericginger, and omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce the symptoms of OA.

Omega-3 is one of Dr. Warner’s top products for easing the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis. Studies revealed that Omega-3 fatty acids are particularly beneficial for both joint health and mood regulation. Our Arthritis Bundle contains two dynamic products that work in tandem to combat joint pain and relieve inflammation naturally. Featuring turmeric, ginger, PEA tart cherry extract, this powerful duo fights oxidative stress, supports muscle recovery, and relieves pain. These popular supplements are a natural and safe alternative to NSAIDs.

Embracing a Holistic Approach

Living with osteoarthritis is not just about managing physical symptoms; it’s about nurturing your mental well-being too. By adopting a holistic approach that includes physical activity, mindfulness, connection, balanced nutrition, and natural supplements, you can support your journey toward health and happiness. Remember, you’re not alone on this journey. There’s a community of support at Warner Orthopedics & Wellness and a wealth of natural strategies to help you thrive, body and mind.

6 out of 10 Americans are obese and 88%-93% meet the defining criteria for metabolic dysfunction, with disorders such as insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and prediabetes. Obesity increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and more.

Weight loss can feel like a daunting task, but making strategic and small changes one step at a time is ideal as you progress towards your overall weight loss and wellness goals. This is where supplements, combined with diet and lifestyle changes, can boost your weight loss efforts.

Dr. Meredith Warner

Dr. Meredith Warner developed targeted supplements to combat the fundamental, core causes of obesity and common weight loss pitfalls. Along with addressing metabolic dysfunction and oxidative stress reduction, these supplements contain many other benefits. Let’s get started!

Liver Health and Weight Loss

Since the liver is tasked with metabolizing and flushing toxins from the body, It’s crucial to optimize this vital organ before starting a new diet. Liver detoxing can jumpstart your weight loss efforts and promote a solid foundation for successful and long-lasting diet and lifestyle changes. Watch Dr. Warner’s webinar revealing cutting-edge science about how to optimize your liver health here.

Liver Complex-15 Day Detox Program:
Features a variety of ingredients combined to aid in detoxing the liver and improve its function. A sluggish liver can significantly strain all aspects of the body and lead to chronic joint and connective tissue pain, as well as brain fog and fatigue.

Restoring nutrient deficiencies in the body promotes healthy energy levels, improves bloating symptoms, and supports a healthy metabolism. For best results, we recommend using this cleanse only once a month for optimal benefits.

Optimize Metabolism

People suffer from an umbrella of symptoms known as metabolic dysfunction or “metabolic syndrome” before they begin manifesting signs of overweight and obesity.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions occurring together (high blood pressure and triglycerides, unbalanced cholesterol ratios, high waist circumference, high fasting glucose levels) and increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

The following supplements address metabolic dysfunction challenges and can help revive your stalled weight loss efforts.

Berberine:
Berberine touts a significant metabolic-regulating health benefit- its ability to mimic fasting by boosting AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) production. This enzyme is a metabolic master switch that signals whether fat will be stored or burned and assists the body in burning stored fat as fuel. The body is tricked into a fasting state.

Activating AMPK in this fashion is similar to fasting, which limits cellular energy when food is not being consumed. Other fasting-mimicking-related benefits of berberine include weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, reduced inflammation levels, cell rejuvenation, and improved cardiovascular health.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid:
A powerful metabolic enhancer that helps tame appetite. Clinical trials support using ALA, to foster mitochondrial health in diabetic patients and to boost insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels. ALA is a vital cofactor for enzymes responsible for mitochondrial energy production and aids in glycemic control. It is also beneficial for improving the health and function of nerves and reducing inflammation.

Resveratrol:
Part of Dr. Warner’s new Longevity series, Resveratrol slows aging while improving cellular and metabolic health. It strengthens the stress response and promotes mitochondrial biogenesis (increasing the number and size of energy-producing mitochondria) needed to reduce the risk of several age-related conditions.

Resveratrol also increases AMPK activation which assists the body in burning stored fat as fuel. Bonus: as a potent antioxidant supplement, resveratrol also offers brain-protective and anti-inflammatory properties.

Pterostilbene:
Another supplement that mimics fasting, pterostilbene improves metabolism and increases insulin sensitivity to convert glucose into usable energy. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory traits help minimize heart disease risk while fighting free radicals. BONUS: if joint pain keeps you from exercising, this supplement helps reduce low-grade chronic inflammation by suppressing COX-2 enzymes.

NMN:
Enhances energy metabolism and promotes insulin sensitivity while fighting age-associated weight gain. Improves cellular energy, mitochondrial health, metabolism, and metabolic health. Raises the body’s NAD+ (one of the most crucial molecules needed for cellular health) levels. Without sufficient NAD+ the body is unable to function properly. Bonus: NMN slows down aging processes and potentially reverses aging at the cellular level.

Daily B- Complex Gummies:
Since the B vitamins are critical for nerve and brain health, metabolism, and optimal cell health, we’ve packaged all the essential B vitamins in a convenient and tasty strawberry gummy. Also features Schisandra Berry, an adaptogen that aids in stress management.

This vegan gummy stands out as the only supplement you need for total nervous system support, enhanced mitochondrial function, and growth of healthy red blood cells. B12 helps support your new healthy choices by combating fatigue, boosting energy levels, and enhancing your metabolism.

Stress and Sleep Support:

What do stress levels and inadequate sleep have to do with weight loss?

You may be surprised to learn they have EVERYTHING to do with weight loss.

While the body deals with short-term stress well, prolonged stress causes excess cortisol (known as the “stress hormone”) to be released. Chronic elevated cortisol leads to weight gain, increased appetite, sleep problems, high blood pressure, and elevated risk of heart attacks and stroke. Many studies confirm that poor sleep quality is highly correlated with weight gain and obesity.

Proper sleep (7-8 hours every night) allows the body to repair itself. During sleep, all the health benefits occur such as cell restoration and DNA repair. All of the functions of weight loss happen in conjunction with a good night’s sleep.

BONUS: all the restorative benefits of sleep are amplified if you sleep in a fasted state.

The following supplements help manage stress and sleep quality which are both vital for weight loss efforts.

Delta-8 THC Gummies:
Dr. Warner developed Delta-8 THC and Full Spectrum CBD as an affordable alternative to medical marijuana. The ingredients in this strawberry-flavored, gluten-free gummy work together to promote deep relaxation and sleep and to help you drift off to sleep faster. People report the best sleep of their lives! Other benefits of this neuroprotective formula include stress and anxiety relief and reduced pain.

Sleep Gummies:
Featuring tart cherry extract, melatonin, chamomile, and GABA, restful sleep gummies support overall sleep quality- fall asleep faster and wake up refreshed without feeling groggy. Bonus: Formulated to fight oxidative stress, increase joint mobility, and combat inflammation. Enjoy natural pain relief that works as well as NSAIDs without the problematic side effects.

Calm Gummies:
These strawberry-flavored, gluten-free gummies combine several soothing ingredients that work together to calm your mind and nervous system (without making you drowsy) and optimize your body’s response to outside stressors. Ingredients lower cortisol in the body to aid with weight loss.

Losing Weight Is Challenging

Are you struggling daily with cravings and willpower? Stepping on the scale only to feel disappointment yet again? Trying diet after diet only to feel constantly defeated?

You’re not alone!

People mistakenly believe that a lack of motivation and self-control are the culprits. But scientists now know that out-of-whack hormones and brain chemicals undermine our best intentions. Let’s walk through them together.

First of all, don’t be too hard on yourself. A mysterious yet complex biology is derailing your best efforts. Once we understand the science behind these persistent urges driving you to overeat, we can better understand how to treat or to manage them.

hunger hormones diagram

Understanding Cravings

Unbalanced hunger hormones like ghrelin can trigger feelings of hunger even after eating a satisfying meal. Others like GLP-1 and leptin normally signal satisfaction, but binging short-circuits that response. Many people with obesity and/or insulin resistance have leptin resistance as well. This means no matter how much leptin is made with eating, the signal for satiety (fullness) never happens in the brain. GLP-1 receptor agonists are synthetic drugs that act like natural gut-derived hormones that are also released upon eating. New injectables called GLP-1 agonists (liraglutide, semaglutide) restore brain sensitivity to fullness/feeding, so you feel full faster while cravings and portion sizes diminish. Rebalancing these gut-derived hormones provides a biological boost to any lifestyle changes.

tray with burgers fries and shakes

Addictive Eating Behaviors

Other hormones such as dopamine, opioids, and neural chemicals make sugary or fatty fare downright addictive! And we can’t ignore the food industry’s seemingly deliberate and strategic ways of keeping us addicted. Ultra-processed foods are proven to increase cravings and overeating and further derail our efforts. It’s a vicious cycle.

Brain science now reveals the previously missing links between pathological craving and related compulsive disorders. If we understand neurobiology we can medically manipulate it and administer targeted pharmaceuticals as biochemical re-education to curb craving. Targeted medications can re-establish self-directed choice by rebalancing neurochemistry. While drugs don’t replace cognitive-behavioral approaches, they may provide critical biochemical support for those working to overcome addiction and regain control over their lives.

Weight Loss Drugs

Obesity medications like phentermine and topiramate have been around for a while and dial down dopamine’s constant reward-seeking signals that trigger cravings. Naltrexone blocks opioids driving urges to splurge. Resetting these neurotransmitters alleviates the feeling of being hopelessly “hooked” on the wrong foods. Controlling biology empowers personal choice. And we all need an ally sometimes. Now new medicines can help normalize that biology so your weight loss journey gets easier and more manageable.

Emerging Weight Loss Drugs

And we doctors now have a range of once-weekly semaglutide or daily liraglutide injections that harness GLP-1’s and other gut hormones’ potential, curbing compulsion at the source, not through brute willpower but by normalizing biology. New pill combinations also fine-tune appetite signals. These targeted therapies have tipped the scales for many of my patients despite previous failed diets. Now losing weight feels achievable for them. I want that for you too!

Of course, adjusting your eating and activity is crucial. The goal is not to remain on these drugs forever but to gain some weight loss momentum that keeps you motivated to make healthy and sustainable choices for the long term. But behavior occurs in biology and empowering the latter lets the former fall into place.

At Warner Orthopedics & Wellness we understand these unique challenges and can redirect disordered biological drivers of weight gain rather than simply blaming gluttony or laziness. You deserve compassionate science-based solutions free from stigma. Book a visit today. In-person and telehealth appointments are available.

Let’s explore this new frontier together!
